Startup Technician

As a Startup Technician, you will be the vital final touch on new construction projects—making sure HVAC systems are not only installed but fully optimized and ready to perform. You will bring systems to life by conducting start-up procedures, system diagnostics, and fine-tuning controls to match engineered sequences of operation. Your work ensures comfort, efficiency, and long-term reliability for every project we deliver. This role blends hands-on technical skill with advanced troubleshooting, digital programming, and client-facing support. You will work closely with the construction team, project managers, and service technicians to ensure a seamless handoff from install to service.

In this role, you will be responsible for

  • Perform HVAC System Startups - Execute detailed startup procedures for newly installed systems, ensuring all components operate according to design specs and safety protocols.
  • Conduct Advanced System Troubleshooting - Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and controls-related issues to ensure optimal performance and minimal downtime.
  • Configure BAS and Controllers - Program and fine-tune building automation systems and controllers to align with the engineered sequence of operations.
  • Interpret Engineering Drawings & Technical Docs - Review and apply shop drawings, submittals, and specifications for accurate equipment setup and operation.
  • Commission HVAC Systems - Perform comprehensive commissioning procedures, including verifying sensor and actuator functionality, testing sequences, and documenting results.
  • Document All Work and System Adjustments - Maintain accurate records of startups, diagnostics, system settings, changes made, and final performance data.
  • Provide Factory-Level Support and Client Training - Act as a liaison between the field and manufacturers, while offering guidance and training to clients and internal teams.
  • Update O&M and As-Built Documentation - Record system changes and update operation and maintenance manuals to reflect field conditions and completed commissioning.
  • Mentor and Train Field Technicians - Support knowledge transfer by training service techs on system operation, diagnostics, and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Stay Current with Industry Technology - Continuously learn and apply new techniques, programming logic, and product advancements to remain effective in an evolving HVAC landscape.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and/or carry up to 75 lbs occasionally and 50 lbs repetitively.
  • Ability to bend, twist, reach and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Shall always follow company safety policies, by wearing the proper PPE for each job task as required by VOSHA, OSHA, and NIOSH guidelines.
  • The ability to climb and work from up to a 40-foot ladder.
  • Able to work in various weather conditions.

Qualifications

  • At least ten years related experience required.
  • VRF experience
  • Vermont Electrical License – Type S or Journeyman
  • Universal EPA
  • VT and/or NH Natural gas certification
  • VT and/or NH LP gas certification
  • NH and/or VT NORA Silver oil certification
  • Valid driver’s license

Benefits

The base hourly range for this role is $35.00 to $55.00 per hour. We determine final compensation based on discussions with applicants and their experience in similar roles.
